New director appointed to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada


Ottawa, ON March 25, 2003 Dr Barbara Sherwood Lollar has been appointed to a three-year term on the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Allan Rock, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), made the announcement yesterday.

Currently, Dr Sherwood Lollar is a professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Toronto. She is also the director of the Stable Isotope Laboratory and an adjunct professor in the Department of Chemistry.

During her career, she has contributed to many academic journals as an author and referee. In addition, Dr Sherwood Lollar has received a number of research awards from Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, including a EWR Steacie Fellowship, a Postdoctoral Fellowship and a Postgraduate Scholarship.

“Dr Sherwood Lollar is a very welcome addition to council,” says Dr Tom Brzustowski, President of NSERC. “She is somebody for whom ‘innovation’ isn’t just a word. She has made it happen in a big way.”

NSERC is one of the key federal agencies investing in people, discovery and innovation. The council supports both basic university research through research grants, and project research through partnerships among universities, governments and the private sector, as well as the advanced training of highly qualified people.
