Quebec health research gets $112M injection


Montreal, QC September 5, 2003 Some 281 health research-related projects in Quebec have received a funding injection from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research that totals $112.6 million.

“The Government of Canada has more than doubled its health research investment over the last three years and by doing so has contributed to the development of an internationally-competitive health research environment in Quebec,” said Martin Cauchon, Attorney General of Canada, Minister of Justice, and Minister responsible for Quebec, at the announcement. “The projects we are announcing today will help to improve the health of all Canadians, while also attracting and retaining some of the best researchers right here in Quebec.”

The projects will be conducted at universities and research agencies in the province. The studies will be carried out over periods of one to five years and cover a wide spectrum of health research.

“The research projects announced today illustrate the breadth and excellence of Quebec’s health research enterprise,” said Dr Rmi Quirion, scientific director of the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. “The cutting-edge projects cover a broad spectrum of health research and will lead to better prevention and treatment for a variety of diseases affecting Canadians.”
