Quebec research organization appoints new VP and scientific director

Montreal, QC – Dr Howard Bergman has been appointed to the position of vice-president and scientific director of the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ). He will assume his duties on April 14.

Dr Bergman earned his degree in medicine in 1969 and in geriatric medicine in 1987, from McGill University. He is a full professor in the departments of medicine, family medicine and oncology and the first holder of the Joseph Kaufmann Chair in Geriatric Medicine at McGill University. He also heads the division of geriatric medicine in the department of medicine at McGill University and the Jewish General Hospital.

Dr Bergman is a researcher at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies and for the Bloomfield Centre for Research in Aging at the Jewish General Hospital’s Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research. He conducts research projects on chronic disease, frailty and aging, on the organization of healthcare services, and on early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

“Dr Bergman will help enrich the diversity and the complementary nature of expertise already present on the FRSQ team, in the areas of training, university affiliation, fields of research and methodology,” says Yves Joanette, chairman and CEO of FRSQ.

The FRSQ reports to Quebec’s minister of economic development, innovation and export trade and supports health research in the province through promoting and providing funding for research, among other activities.
