Cardiovascular research has new director in Manitoba

Winnipeg, MB – The University of Manitoba and St Boniface General Hospital have appointed Dr Larry Hryshko as director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.

Dr Hryshko succeeds Dr Naranjan Dhalla, a world-renowned heart researcher and distinguished professor of physiology at the University of Manitoba. Dr Dhalla stepped down after two decades as the organization’s head.

Dr Hryshko joined the institute (formerly known as the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences) in 1994, and has been a member of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre since its creation. He and his team of researchers investigate the molecular properties of sodium-calcium exchangers – proteins essential for normal cardiac function. His laboratory collaborates locally, nationally, and internationally with academic research laboratories and pharmaceutical companies.

In addition, he is a professor of physiology at the University of Manitoba and holds a Canada Research Chair in cardiac electrophysiology. He is a recipient of the Dr Robert Beamish Award for having received the highest ranked Heart and Stroke Foundation grant in Manitoba and Canada.
