Biofilm sensitivity diagnostic kit gets Canadian regulatory approval

Edmonton, AB – Innovotech says that Health Canada has approved its antimicrobial sensitivity kit for sale in Canada. The company also says that PML Microbiologicals, a manufacturer of culture media and microbiological products throughout North America has been selected as manufacturer of the device.

The kitallows physicians to assess the effectiveness of combinations of antibiotics against a specific patients biofilm infection, says Dr Wolfgang Muhs, CEO of Innovotech. Biofilm infections like cystic fibrosis lung disease and ventilator-acquired pneumonia are very difficult to treat. In the past, physicians were required to make an educated guess, often based on an MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) test, which is inappropriate in a biofilm infection.

The kit is the first of several the company says it plans to develop, each focusing on a specific species of microorganism.
