Layoffs announced at Environment Canada

Ottawa, ON – Environment Canada has announced the layoff of 50 term employees, with their employment ending on June 30. The layoffs include employees who were hired on a short-term basis to perform a certain body of work for a specified time, and not permanent staff, according to department spokesperson Mark Johnson. He added that the layoffs are a part of government-wide fiscal restraint, but did not specify how many of the layoffs are of scientific staff.

He did note that as a science-based department, Environment Canada provides the science information needed to support informed decisions about the environment. Over two-thirds of its budget and more than half of its workforce – over 3,000 employees – is dedicated to science and technology.
