$67M to support R&D projects in Atlantic Canada


Summerside, PEI – The federal government has announced $67.1 million in research and development projects across Atlantic Canada through ACOAs Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF).

In total, 29 research and development projects will be awarded AIF funding. Details of the projects follows:

Projects in PEI are:

– Elanco Animal Health Canada, Charlottetown. Project: Sea Lice Therapeutants for Health Management. The total estimated cost of the project is approximately $5.9 million and up to $2.9 million will be contributed from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– Kodak Canada, Summerside. Project: Worldwide Radiology Information System Application. The total estimated cost of the project is $5.1 million and up to $2 million will be contributed from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over three years.

– MDS-PRAD Technologies, Summerside. Project: ER-7 Optimization of erosion-resistant coatings for gas turbine engines. The project, with a total estimated cost of over $4.5 million, will receive up to $2.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– Neurodyn, Charlottetown. Project: Neuroprotective Therapies – to develop and market products for early detection and treatment of neurological disorders caused by environmental neurotoxins. With total estimated costs of approximately $2.3 million, this project will receive up to $1.5 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– Prince Edward Island Aquaculture Alliance, Charlottetown. Project: Management of Invasive Tunicate Species Fouling Aquaculture Farms. This project, with total estimated costs of approximately $3.8 million, will receive $2.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown. Project: Discovery and Production of Marine Bioproducts. With total estimated project costs of approximately $7.3 million, this project will receive up to $3 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five- year period.

Projects in New Brunswick are:

-Forest Protection, Lincoln. Project: Research to develop new biopesticide products and more effective aerial applications. This project, with total estimated costs of approximately $8.2 million, will receive up to $3 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– Fraser Papers East Operation, Edmundston. Project: Efficient development of higher-value paper products. The project, with total costs of approximately $3.1 million, will receive up to $1.9 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– Innovatia, Saint John. Project: Integration and delivery of semantic knowledge- based systems. This project, with total estimated costs of approximately $4.4 million, will receive up to $2.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– Institute of Biomedical Engineering, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB. Project: Development of a technologically advanced prosthetic hand. This project, with total estimated costs of approximately $4.3 million, will receive up to $2.9 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– Marwood, Fredericton. Project: Development of technologies for advanced low maintenance wood products. The project, with total costs of approximately $3.4 million, will receive up to $2.5 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– Atlantic Cancer Research Institute, Moncton. Project: Genomically guided biomarker discovery for cancer. This project, with total estimated costs of approximately $6.2 million, will receive up to $3 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

The projects in Nova Scotia are:

-Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro. Project: Developing Genetic Tools to Control Aleutian Disease in Mink. The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $2.9 million, will receive up to $1.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– C-Vision, Amherst. Project: LED Roadway Lighting. The project, with total estimated costs of $2.9 million, will receive up to $2.1 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a two-year period.

– IT Interactive Services, Halifax. Project: Genieknows Personalized Local Search. The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $3.2 million, will receive up to $2 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over two years.

– MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates, Dartmouth. Project: Space Enabled AIS Collection and Distribution System. The project, with total estimated costs of $3.7 million, will receive up to $2.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over two years.

– MedMira and MedMira Laboratories, Halifax. Project: Development of a Novel Biosensor-Based Diagnostic Technology. The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $5.4 million, will receive up to $3 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– Composites Atlantic, Lunenburg. Project: Composite Window Frame for Aeronautics. The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $2.7 million, will receive up to $1.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– Nautel, Hacketts Cove. Project: Developing High Power Solid State Radio Frequency Power Supplies. This project, with total estimated costs of approximately $2.4 million will receive up to $1.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University (Halifax, NS) Project: Architectural Applications of Electronic Textiles. The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $1.4 million, will receive up to $1.1 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– St Francis Xavier University will receive up to $3 million in AIF funding to design software systems to be used for the management of public health care cases, in partnership with Medical Decision Logical of Baltimore, Maryland, and the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority. The total cost of the project is estimated at $4.9 million.

The projects in Newfoundland and are:

– Lotek Wireless, St Johns. Project: Nano LAT Worlds Smallest Geolocation Data Storage Tag An Integrated Animal Borne Fisheries Management and Oceanographic Data Collection Platform. The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $4.2 million, will receive up to $2.8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over four years.

– Oceans Research, St Johns. Project: Development of a High Resolution 3-Dimensional Iceberg Profiling Sonar System The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $2.7 million, will receive up to $1.2 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, St Johns. Project: Remote Community Wind-Hydrogen-Diesel Energy Solution. With total estimated costs of approximately $9.7 million, the project will receive up to $3 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period.

– Verafin, Mount Pearl. Project: Development of Advanced Intelligent System Technologies: Customer Modelling for the Detection of Money Laundering, Fraud and Predictive Behaviour. This project, with total estimated costs of approximately $2.6 million, will receive up to $1.4 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over three years.

– NewLab Clinical Research, St Johns. Project: Psoriasis Target and Drug Development. With total estimated costs of approximately $4.9 million, the project will receive up to $2.3 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over five years.

– Memorial University of Newfoundland, St Johns. Project: Small Craft Simulation Backbone Technology Development. With total estimated costs of approximately $4.1 million, the project will receive up to $2 million in assistance from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over three years.

St Johns. Project: Advanced Well Completion Modeling and Optimization. With total estimated costs of approximately $2.8 million, the project will receive up to $1.7 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three-year period.

– Instrumar, St Johns. Project: Attalus Fiber System. The project, with total estimated costs of approximately $5.5 million, will receive up to $2.4 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over three years.
