$418M in NSERC funding for 3,700 researchers


Ottawa, ON – The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) has announced the recipients of its 2014 Discovery Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements, Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, Postgraduate Scholarships, and Postdoctoral Fellowships. In total 3,796 recipients – scientists, engineers, post-doctoral fellows, and students at universities across the country – received research awards.

In what the federal government says is an integral component of its efforts to develop, attract and retain the world’s most talented researchers at Canadian universities, the NSERC Discovery Grants Program funds discovery research in a multitude of scientific and engineering disciplines. Together, these awards build a broad base of research capacity across the country.

“NSERC Discovery Grants and Scholarships are fundamentally important for sustaining outstanding research in Canada in areas that are critical for the well-being of all Canadians, for our economic growth and prosperity, and for training our future scientific leaders,” says John Capone, Western University Vice-President (Research).More importantly, this support helps us to remain globally competitive and innovative in pushing the frontiers of knowledge that will benefit Canada.”

Altogether, 2,031 Discovery Grants are being awarded, totaling $325,256,520; and 125 Discovery Accelerator Supplements are being provided, totaling $15,000,000. For the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, 800 are being awarded at the Master’s level, totaling $14,000,000, and 330 at the Doctoral level, totaling $31,990,000. 380 Doctoral level Postgraduate Scholarships are being award, totaling $21,819,000, and 130 Postdoctoral Fellowships are being awarded, totaling $10,400,000. Doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships are over 2-3 years, while the Master’s level are for 12 months. In sum, 3,796 awards are being made, representing total funding of $418,465,520.
