TSE research gets $1 million funding

Regina, SK – The Saskatchewan government says it is providing $1 million to fund research into transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) at the University of Saskatchewan.

TSE diseases include bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, chronic wasting disease in elk and deer, scrapie in sheep, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in humans. At present, there is no known treatment, cure or vaccine available for these.

“Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have a large role in developing a National Centre of Excellence for TSE research,” says Bruce Waygood, who is university co-ordinator of health research. “This research funding will enhance a number of opportunities for Saskatchewan.”
