Resource giants band together to build $5.3M mining chair


Edmonton, AB November 3, 2003 Eleven corporations in the resource sector have come together to create the Alberta Chamber of Resources Industry Chair in Mining Engineering.

Combined contributions from Albian Sands, BHP Diamonds, Diavik Diamonds Mines, Finning, Elk Valley Coal, Luscar, Matrikon, Norwest Mining, Suncor, Syncrude Canada, and TransAlta total C$1.4 million. Additional funds of $2.25 million have come from the Canada Research Chairs Program and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation as well as other sources. Total investment will be $5.3 million.

Dr Clayton V Deutsch, Canada Research Chair in natural resources uncertainty management, has been appointed to the Alberta Chamber of Resources Industry Chair in Mining Engineering. A professor in the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, within the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta, Dr Deutsch conducts research relating to the theory and application of geostatistics to earth science data. Using statistical analysis and risk assessment, Dr Deutsch works with data supplied from traditional sampling and makes predictions of the oil, gas, and mineral resources that lie beneath the earth’s surface.
