NSERC awards $535M in grants and scholarships


Victoria, BC – The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has awarded grants and scholarships to 9,900 professors and students across the country.

In total, $535 million will be provided through grants and scholarships to professors and students at 75 higher education institutions in Canada:

– Some 3,000 professors from across Canada will receive $398 million in NSERC’s internationally recognized Discovery Grants program, which supports basic research in virtually every field of science and engineering;
– 2,602 young university researchers (2,352 at the graduate level and 250 at the postdoctoral level) will receive $110 million; and
– 3,469 undergraduate students will receive Undergraduate Student Research Awards worth a total of $15.6 million to give them hands-on research experience in a laboratory.

In addition, this year there is a boost in grant funding to NSERC’s Discovery Accelerator Supplements, an initiative introduced last year to foster research excellence. This initiative provides significant funding supplements to a select group of researchers in order to boost their productivity at a critical juncture in their careers.

The 15 universities receiving the largest allocation of NSERC grants and scholarships this year are as follows:

University of Alberta: $38.7 million
University of British Columbia: $37.2 million
McGill University: $30.5 million
University of Waterloo: $25.0 million
University of Calgary: $23.6 million
Queen’s University: $20.2 million
McMaster University: $19.5 million
University of Ottawa; $16.7 million
University of Western Ontario: $15.9 million
Universite de MontrEal: $15.8 million
Universite Laval: $15.2 million
University of Saskatchewan: $14.4 million
University of Guelph: $14.3 million
Dalhousie University: $13.5 million
