Cod genomics research project gets $350,000 more funding

St John’s, NF – The government of Newfoundland and Labrador says it is contributing $350,000 to a Genome Atlantic research project designed to enhance the commercial viability of the cod aquaculture industry in Atlantic Canada.

Led by Jane Symonds, of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre and Sharen Bowman, of Genome Atlantic, the $18-million Atlantic cod genomics and broodstock development project will identify and select elite broodstock through the application of selective breeding and genomics. Ultimately, the goal is to supply the developing Atlantic cod aquaculture industry with improved broodstock. Research and industry-partner activities are also occurring at facilities in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, British Columbia and New Hampshire.
