Cellular therapy centre gets green light with $9.2M funding

Montreal, QC – A new research facility, the Centre of Excellence for Cellular Therapy (CECT), is being built by the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital. The hospital says the new centres infrastructure and equipment will allow it to undertake leading research on stem cells, the immune system, and cancer.

Raymond Bachand, Quebec’s minister of economic development, innovation and export trade, announced the three-stage project which includes a three-floor, 3066 sq m addition to the hospital’s main pavilion. The total cost of the project is $9.2 million, with the provincial government contributing $5.8 million, the hospital foundation $3 million, and Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital $400,000.

“This investment gives wings to a major research project, making Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Quebec’s uncontested leader in bone marrow and stem cell transplantion,” says Carole Deschambault, the hospitals chief executive officer.

The new infrastructure will enable researchers to handle stem cells within a highly secure and sterile environment. Construction will begin next spring and should be completed within 24 months.
