$85M for new round of research chairs

Quebec, QC – The federal government has announced the latest round of Canada Research Chair appointments, with $85.7 million awarded to support 109 chairs.

“University research in Canada has expanded enormously over the past several years, and our Canada Research Chairs have made vital contributions to this evolution,” says Maxime Bernier, minister of industry and minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs program. “My government will continue to invest in research and development. It will also work to promote basic and applied research, in particular in science and technology, because it is essential to the future economic well-being of Canada.”

The current round of funding will support 28 renewed chairs and 81 new ones.

The money also includes $11.4 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to support research infrastructure for 71 projects, including the development of smart and functional polymers, cutting edge diabetes research, and the design of new learning environments for literacy development.
