$619M in funding supports new and renewed Canadian research

Vancouver, BC – The federal government has appointed 305 new and renewed Canada research chairs at 53 postsecondary institutions across the country, and provided a total of $260 million in funding for them through the Canada Research Chairs Program. In addition, $342 million is being provided through the Research Support Fund to cover the indirect costs of research at Canadian institutions, as well as $17 million in infrastructure support for the Canada Research Chairs Program through the Canada Foundation for Innovation. The combined funding, $619 million in total, will help support cutting-edge research from coast to coast to coast.

The announcement was made by Kirsty Duncan, the federal minister of science, at the University of British Columbia last week.

In total, nearly 1,700 Canada Research Chair holders are working at over 70 postsecondary institutions across the country in a wide range of fields. The full list of current new and renewed recipients can be found here.

“I’d like to extend my sincere congratulations to the latest new and renewed Canada Research Chairs,” said Duncan. “The Government of Canada is proud to support these elite researchers who improve our depth of knowledge, strengthen Canada’s international competitiveness, and help train the next generation of our highly skilled workforce.”
