$204M supports new and renewed Canada Research Chairs

Guelph, ON – The federal government today announced that 253 new or renewed Canada Research Chairs at 56 Canadian degree-granting postsecondary institutions are being awarded a total of $203.9 million to undertake new research.

“The Canada Research Chairs Program helps to position Canadian postsecondary institutions as world-class research centres,” said Suzanne Fortier, president of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and a member of the Canada Research Chairs Program Steering Committee. “With this funding support, researchers are finding solutions to today’s social, health and economic issues and are training the next generation of innovative scientists and scholars.”

The investment announced today includes an additional $10.2 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) for research infrastructure associated with the new Chair awards.

“The CFI is proud to support these talented, well-trained individuals who will undoubtedly drive new ideas, develop original products and discover new ways to tackle issues,” said Gilles G Patry, president and CEO of the CFI. “Investing in people, providing them with the tools they need and creating opportunities to collaborate across boundaries are all critical factors in fostering an innovative society.”

The 253 chairholders included in the announcement will conduct research in a diversity of fields.
